Minimum Requirements

  • What are the minimum requirements to use NOOK for Windows 8?
  • Windows 8.1 is the minimum version recommended for use with the NOOK App. If you already have Windows 8.0, Microsoft provides a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 at windows.microsoft.com. The NOOK App does not support Windows 8.0 outside of the US.
  • What countries are supported by NOOK for Windows 8?
  • A list of countries currently supported by the NOOK app is displayed when opening the app. In order to Shop for books, magazines, newspapers, and comics, the billing address for the selected payment method must match the country selected at login. Some content is only available in the country it was purchased and may not continue to be available if you change the country of residence for the app.

Accounts

  • How do I create an account to use NOOK for Windows 8?
  • Users outside of the US and UK must use a Microsoft account to login, read, and shop for books, magazines, newspapers, and comics.
    If you do not have a Microsoft account already, you can create one by opening the NOOK app and then clicking or tapping on 'Sign up for a Microsoft account' after you have selected 'Continue with your Microsoft account.' If you have a Microsoft account, but need password help, visit login.live.com.
  • How do I change the payment method used to make purchases from NOOK for Windows 8?
  • You can add or update the payment method associated with the account you have used to sign into NOOK for Windows 8.
    To change or add payment methods for your Microsoft account:
    • Swipe right to left on your screen to bring up the Charm Bar
    • On the Charm menu, select 'Settings'
    • In the settings menu, select 'Account'
    • Select the option to 'Manage your payment method'
    Note that in order to Shop for books, magazines, newspapers, and comics, the billing address for the selected payment method must match the country selected at login.
    Payment methods can also be added or changed by logging into your Microsoft account on the web at login.live.com
  • How do I change the country in NOOK for Windows 8?
  • If you have previously signed in to the NOOK app, you will need to sign out in order to change the country associated with the app. In order to do this:
    • Swipe right to left on your screen to bring up the Charm Bar
    • On the Charm menu, select 'Settings'
    • In the settings menu, select 'Account'
    • Select the option to 'Sign Out'
    • Reopen the app and select the desired country at sign-in.
    Note that in order to Shop for books, magazines, newspapers, and comics, the billing address for the selected payment method must match the country selected at login. Some content is only available in the country selected at login. Some content is only available if you change the country of residence for the app.

Shopping

  • Can I shop for books, magazines, newspapers and comics on NOOK for Windows 8?
  • You can purchase new books, magazines, newspapers and comics through the Shop icon in NOOK for Windows 8. Your new purchases will appear in your Library. In addition to purchases, you can also sample books for free and try any magazine or newspaper free for 14 days.
  • How do I search for a particular book, newspaper, magazine or comic to purchase on Nook for Windows 8?
  • To search for a book, newspaper, magazine or comic to purchase, you can use the Windows 8 universal search mechanism. From the Library or Shop in the app:
    • Tap or click on the search bar in the upper right corner of the screen and begin typing the search term;
    • Swipe from right to left and select 'Search'. Type search words, such as book or magazine titles and the results for those key words from within the Shop will be displayed on the left hand side of the screen;
    • Or, just start typing and the Search mechanism will appear and press Enter on your keyboard for results.

Library

  • I'm having trouble downloading my books on NOOK for Windows 8. What do I do?
  • Possible reasons why you may not be able to download books:
    The payment method on your Microsoft account may have expired OR a default payment method may not have been selected.
    To update your payment information or set up a default payment method:
    • In the NOOK for Windows 8 app select 'Settings' and then payment methods
    • Go to http://account.live.com and select the 'Billing' option
    • Once you've updated your payment information, try downloading your books again.
    • If you have changed your Country of Residence, it may not be possible to download some content if the billing address for your payment method does not match the country in which the content was purchased.
    • If you're still having issues please archive and then unarchive the book, and try downloading your book again.
    • If you're still having issues; please sign out of the NOOK app and then sign back in.
  • How do I get back to My Library when reading a book, magazine, newspaper or comic?
  • To return your library when reading a book, magazine, newspaper or comic, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the Reading Tools menu (The Reading Tools menu can also be accessed by swiping down from the top of your screen). Tap or click on the Library icon to get back to your library.
  • Why don't new issues of my newspapers or magazines show up in my Library?
  • There may have been a loss of network connectivity during the scheduled time for delivery. Please check the network or Wi-Fi settings on your computer or tablet to make sure you are connected to the Internet. Next, from the Library screen, swipe up to reveal the Reading Tools menu and select 'Sync'.
    If you leave your device on or in sleep mode overnight, and it is connected to Wi-Fi, it will sync automatically and download the latest issues of publications to your Library.
    If new content is not visible after you have confirmed that network connectivity is available and have performed a sync, try to sign out of the app and then sign back in.
  • My library is getting crowded. How can I archive items from my library?
  • NOOK for Windows 8 easily lets you archive books, magazines, newspapers and comics from your library.
    From the library screen just touch and hold on a cover drag it in a downward motion (a checkmark will appear for the item you selected). This will reveal options such as full version available (for samples), view details, download, archive, or sync. Tap or click on 'Archive' to archive the book.
    Please note: Archiving an item will remove the file from your device and move the item into the Archive folder in your NOOK Library in the NOOK Cloud. You can unarchive the item if you want to re-download it to your device.
  • Can I import PDF or ePub files in the NOOK for Windows 8 app?
  • Yes. To import (or side load) PDF or ePub files:
    • Swipe up from the bottom of the Home screen and select 'Import,' or swipe right to the 'More' section in 'My Library' and select 'Import.' This will display a file menu you can navigate to find the file you would like to import into your Library.
    • Tap or click on the file to select it
    • Tap or click on the 'Import' button to add it to your NOOK Library.
    • You can view and open imported files from the 'My Files' section of your NOOK Library.
  • Why can't I import some of my ePub of PDF files?
  • The NOOK app supports the import of ePub and PDF file into your Library from 'My PC' and SkyDrive. However, it does not support opening or importing files that have security or DRM associated with them.

Navigation

  • How do I quickly access the book I'm reading now?
  • The fastest way to quickly access what you are reading now is through the 'My Library' section. My Library displays content you have most recently read or purchased from any NOOK device or NOOK Reading App. Items are sorted by most recently added, not by publication date.
    You can sort the items in Library by Title and for books also by Author. You can also choose to show all Library items at one time, or view just one type of content at a time, such as books, magazines, etc.
    Another way to locate the item you're reading now is to bring up Reading Tools menu. Access the Reading Tools menu by swiping up from the bottom of the screen or swiping down from the top of the screen. Tap or click on the cover to return to the item you are currently reading.
  • How do I pin what I am reading to my Windows Start screen?
  • To pin content from your Library to the Windows Start screen, open up a book, newspaper, magazine, or comic. Once open, swipe up to reveal the Reading Tools menu. From the Reading Tools menu, tap or click 'Pin' icon.
    You will then be able to give a unique name to this item that you would like to pin to the Windows Start menu. Tap or click 'Pin to Start' to add it to your Windows Start screen.

Reading Tools

  • How do I look up words in the dictionary while reading a book?
  • To find the definition or a word while reading, tap or click on the word on screen and select 'Look up' from the menu.
    A scrollable window will be displayed
    Another way to locate the item you're reading now is to bring up Reading Tools menu. Access the Reading Tools menu by swiping up from the bottom of the screen or swiping down from the top of the screen. Tap or click on the cover to return to the item you are currently reading.
  • How do I highlight text while reading a book?
  • To highlight text in the NOOK app
    • Tap or click on the spot on the screen where you want to begin highlighting
    • Drag the circles that are displayed on screen to the beginning and the end of the text you'd like to highlight
    • Finally, tap or click on 'Add Highlight'
  • How do I change the color of the highlight I've added to text in a book?
  • If you'd like to change the color of the highlight you've added
    • Tap or click on the text you've highlighted
    • Next, tap or click on 'Change Color'
    • Tap or click on one of the other colors that is displayed.
  • How do I remove a highlight I've added to a book?
  • To remove a highlight:
    • Tap or click on the text you've highlighted
    • Next, tap or click on 'Delete'
  • How do I change which text I've highlighted in a book?
  • If you want to change the text you've highlighted, you'll have to delete the highlight and then do it again with the text you prefer.
  • How do I add a note (or annotation) about the book I'm reading?
  • To add a note (or annotation) in the NOOK for Windows 8 app:
    • Tap or click on the location where you want your note to be referenced
    • Next, tap or click on 'Add Note'
    • A text field will appear on the screen
    • Tap the text field and begin typing your note.
    • Next, select 'Save'
    • A small page icon will appear in the margin of the book on screen indicating there is a note associated with the text and the text you selected on screen will appear highlighted.
  • How do I view all of my notes in a particular book I'm reading?
  • To view all of the annotations associated with one book:
    • Swipe up from the bottom anywhere within the reader and select 'Annotations'
    • You can navigate to the annotation's location in the book by selecting the item in the Annotation window
  • How do I remove or edit a note I've added?
  • Tap the highlighted text at the note's location and select any item in that menu including:
    • View Note
    • Edit Note
    • Remove Note
    • Change Color
    • Delete
  • How do I find a word or phase in a book?
  • To find a word or phrase in a book using the NOOK for Windows 8 app:
    • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen
    • Select 'Find' from the app menu
    • Type in the word or phrase of interest
    • Select 'Enter'
    • If a word is found that matched the search term, then it will appear highlighted on the screen
    • To find the next or previous instance of that word or phrase, select Next or Previous from the look up menu at the bottom of the screen

Miscellaneous

  • How do I pin the NOOK app to my Windows Start screen?
  • Unlike Windows 8.0, apps download from the Windows Store are not automatically pinned to the Windows Start screen in Windows 8.1. If you want to pin the NOOK App to the Windows Start screen:
    • Open the Windows Start screen
    • Swipe down or use a mouse to tap the down arrow to view all Apps
    • Tap and Hold or Right Click on the NOOK app
    • Select 'Pin to Start'
  • How do I change the size of the Live Tile for the NOOK app or reading content pinned to my Windows Start screen?
  • In Windows 8.1, the NOOK app supports four Windows Live tile sizes including Small, Medium, Wide, and Large. To change the size of the Live Tile for the pinned NOOK app or reading content:
    • Open the Windows Start Screen
    • Tap and Hold or Right Click on the Live Tile for the NOOK app or the reading content that you want to resize
    • Select 'Resize'
    • Select your preferred Live Tile size
  • How do I cancel my magazine or newspaper subscriptions?
  • To manage your magazine or newspaper subscriptions from within the NOOK app:
    • Open the magazine or newspaper from your Library
    • Swipe from the bottom of the screen to bring up the app menu
    • Tap or click on the View Details button
    • The Product Details page will be displayed. Tap or click on the 'manage subscriptions' link
    • Select and confirm the appropriate options.
  • I'm still having issues using the app. Who can I contact for help?

  • How do I uninstall the NOOK application from my Windows 8 device?
  • On the Start screen, swipe down or right-click the app you want to uninstall
